Call to Withdraw Educational Strike

Respect Child Rights

We are deeply concerned about the education strike called by Akhil Nepal Teacher Union from February 2-10, 2006 (Magh 20-28, 2062) in the Capital, highway, towns and Headquarters, said members of the PPCC, a network of national and international human rights and humanitarian organizations.

Educational institutions are protected under international humanitarian law and must not be directly or indirectly involved in the war. The UN Security Council has affirmed that attacks on schools are a grave violation against children’s security and rights (UN Security Council Resolutions 1539 and 1612).

The PPCC network believes that forced school closure is an attack against schools. Nepalese children are receiving less than 100 days of schooling per year because of such forced closures. The decision taken by the Teacher Union-Revolutionary will violate the right to education of thousands of children as guaranteed by the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) Article 28 and hence will hamper their future and the future of Nepal.

PPCC calls upon the Akhil Nepal Teacher Union to respect the children’s right to participation, peace, education, culture and to withdraw its educational strike program scheduled for February.

Partnerships for Protecting Children in Armed Conflict (PPCC) is a network of national and international organizations, Advocacy Forum, Backward Society for Education (BASE), Community Study and Welfare Centre, Concern, Himalayan Human Rights Monitors (Him Rights), Save the Children US, Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict and others working to protect the rights of children affected by armed conflict.
